Remember not all money is created equal. Some money should be earmarked for things like bills, unforeseen emergencies, and retirement. Everyone is on their own. It takes self discipline to do this. The best way to earmark is to prepare a budget.

I agree with this tip. I've been keeping a budget in Excel since 1996 when I went to graduate school and needed to keep a tight rein on my spending. I've continued to track my spending and maintain a budget ever sense. It helps me track trends and increases in monthly costs like utilities over time and it helps me keep my travel and miscellany spending under control.
